Natalie & Mike flew in from New Zealand to get married after 12 years together! They said I do in a twilight ceremony at the amazing Alnwick Garden, followed by an evening under the stars at the Alnwick Treehouse Restaurant.

The bridal preparations took place at boutique hotel The Cookie Jar in Alnwick. Friend Robyn was on hand for the hair and did an amazing job. The bride wore some epic Roc Boots from Australia and even had some toe warmers (genius!) to ensure she stayed warm, and didn’t get cold feet (get it? haha!).

Wild With Love Flowers did an fabulous job with the flowers and centerpieces. They had a table plan with a New Zealand theme, and added in so many little personal touches.

They chose to do a ‘first look’ at the treehouse, meeting up before the ceremony in private and then walked down the aisle together, which was perfect!

I absolutely loved their wedding reading “Falling in love is like owning a dog” !

Here’s the highlights of their wonderful winter wedding day.

Andrew & Katie had such an amazing wedding day!

They got married at the church they attend together – Holy Trinity Church in Gateshead .

The ceremony was amazing, the guests lifted the roof with their singing and there was a live band accompanying the hymns, which made the atmosphere electric. Everyone was made to feel so welcome and I can honestly say it was a privilege to be there and capture their special moments.

Aubergine Hairdressing was on hand for the ladies hair, and Cestria Florist created some amazing bouquets and floral displays. I loved the thistles and kilts as a nod to Katie’s Scottish upbringing.

The reception was rather untraditional, Katie & Andrew hired Gateshead Stadium for a fab 3 course meal, followed by an evening of fun.

They had bouncy castles, obstacle courses, slides and a bungee run! They also had a ceilidh dance. There was so much action to capture and so many laughs. Everyone from young to old joined in and had a marvellous time.

Here’s the highlights of their special day!

Having been a wedding photographer for over ten years, I’ve seen lots of teeny babies at weddings, accompanied by their exhausted parents.

Having been a Mum for over two years (that’s flown!) I’ve also seen and heard situations where new parents were super anxious about attending the wedding of their friend or family member.

Life can change so much when you have a new little bundle to look after. If they aren’t already parents, it’s possible the wedding couple may not be aware of some little things they can do to make everyone feel welcome.

I hope to share some insight into how to make your wedding more welcoming for new parents…..

if they’re happy, their baby will be too!

I’ve called on some friends (from a super awesome Facebook group I use online) to help me with suggesting tips and ideas, so thank you!!

I plan to do a further post very soon about welcoming children at your wedding in general, but this one is specifically for parents with children from birth to just-starting-to-walk.

huddersfield wedding photographer, katie byram photography, babies at weddingsPINIMAGE

1. BE CLEAR ON INVITATIONS

Some couples opt for childfree weddings due to rising costs, venue space or simply because they would prefer to. However, it does need to be clear on invitations, what about ‘babes in arms’ –  will your friend with a super teeny baby be excluded?

“I was uninvited to a wedding last year because (baby) was 4 weeks old. Too young to leave with anyone and it was a no children allowed wedding. I understand no children allowed but newborns are different surely?”

It would be totally impractical or in some cases impossible for the parents to leave a very young baby with someone else,  for a whole day- never mind overnight. So this may be something to discuss with your partner in advance, should the situation arise. Weddings are often booked well in advance so it’s possible that your good friend or family member could have a newborn by your wedding date.

huddersfield wedding photographer, katie byram photography, babies at weddingsPINIMAGE

  2. CREATE SOME ‘QUIET CHILL OUT SPACE’

This came up quite a bit in discussions with new parents. Check if your venue has a little room or area somewhere, preferably with some comfy seating, where your friends who are new parents can escape for some quiet time. Weddings can be overwhelming for both baby and exhausted new parents, so a space out of the main party to help baby to nap, or have a quiet feed is brilliant. If there isn’t a room, and you’re having say an outdoor wedding, what about borrowing a small sided gazebo to use for this purpose?

huddersfield wedding photographer, katie byram photography, babies at weddingsPINIMAGE

3. STOCK UP

You could provide a basket of essentials in the ‘chill out area’ or baby changing area, a few nappies, muslins, wipes, even a toy. It won’t cost much, but will mean the world to your friends.

huddersfield wedding photographer, katie byram photography, babies at weddingsPINIMAGE

4. LET THEM KNOW TIMINGS AND PRACTICALITIES IN ADVANCE

Super small babies might not have a routine yet, but for slightly older ones, it an be crucial. Let your friends know in advance the proposed timings, especially what time the meal(s) are. This will help them plan for managing baby during your wedding.

If there’s non-buggy friendly areas of your wedding celebrations give them a heads up so they can bring a carrier or sling.

TOP TIP – If they are staying at 0n site accommodation, ask the venue staff know to prioritise their check in. This will give time more to drop their bags, feed their baby, and get changed, making things a bit more relaxed.

huddersfield wedding photographer, katie byram photography, babies at weddingsPINIMAGE

5. CONSIDER THE TABLE PLAN

This one might seem obvious, but it might not be best to put a newborn baby next to some noisy party animals. Putting them with your other friends with a baby the same age may be preferable, they are sure to have something to chat about!

Equally, although Mum should feel welcome to feed her baby anywhere; putting them next to your awkward Great Uncle –  who is likely to make an ignorant joke about breastfeeding, may not be wise!

TOP TIP – Make sure they are seated in an area where they can pop out if they need to, rather than crammed in with the pram.

huddersfield wedding photographer, katie byram photography, babies at weddingsPINIMAGE

6. BE UNDERSTANDING

It may be that a close friend isn’t able to attend your wedding as it’s too near to their due date.  Or, they may not know whether or not they can come yet. Sometimes brides get very ‘wrapped up’ in wanting everything to be ‘perfect’ and forget that their wedding isn’t the only big event happening that year. Be flexible and understanding if your friend has to leave early, or only able to attend certain parts of the day, or even have to drop out completely. It may be disappointing but truth be told, your friend is probably already struggling with adjusting to being a new parent, (or juggling a newborn and older children). Don’t add on any more guilt!

marsden wedding venuePINIMAGE

7. GIVE THEM A ‘GET OUT OF JAIL FREE CARD’

With the above, make it super clear to your new-parent-guests , as well as being welcome at your wedding, they are also welcome to leave whenever they need. This will make them feel more welcome, more relaxed, and less guilty if they do need to leave early.

Hope some of the above helped give an insight, please feel free to share.

I love capturing bridal preparations. From a photographers point of view, it allows me to get to know people a bit more before the ceremony – and capture some super fun and emotional moments! It also gives your bridal party a chance to get used to the camera being there (with me blending in the background as much as possible) resulting in more relaxed photographs.

Here’s some tips to enjoy and make the most of your wedding morning…..

1.  CONSIDER WHERE…..

Consider where you’re getting ready – and not just based on the location to your wedding – will it be at home, a family or friends house or a hotel?

If you go for home, its familiar, it’s free, and you’ve got your stuff there…of course, this could be good or bad. (depending on how much of a hoarder you are hah!).

If you get ready at your family home, this could be extra sentimental. Imagine getting ready for your special day surrounded by family photographs and granny’s ornaments.

If you go for a hotel, ask for a room with plenty of window light – this will be helpful to everyone getting ready- including your hair/make up artists and of course your photographer!

The size of the space is important, 8 bridesmaids crammed into a tiny hotel room may not make for a stress free experience! You could ask to see the room beforehand when booking.

If your wedding venue has accommodation, getting ready on site may be a more relaxed experience. With no worries about traffic or what the weather’s doing. But do check when you book your wedding if it will be available. Some venues may have weddings the day before and reserve the rooms for the wedding day couple only.

TOP TIP- If you’re checking out of the hotel en-route to your wedding, definitely enlist a couple of helpers to help pack and transport your stuff from A to B!

huddersfield wedding photographyPINIMAGE

2. DON’T HAVE A FREE FOR ALL!

Consider who will be there. Just your bridal party? What if your bridesmaids have children, will they need to get ready with you too? (Super cute photo alert!) Will your annoying uncle swing by?

I’d advise against ‘the more the merrier’ on the wedding morning. You want people who can help you get ready, not cause you stress or leave you feeling overwhelmed. Know their skills, is your Auntie Margaret a whizz with a needle and thread, is your brother an epic cook? Enlist their help!

huddersfield wedding photographerPINIMAGE

3. WHAT YOU EATING?

No-one wants to be hungry on their wedding day.

If you’re getting ready in a hotel, it might be a great idea to get some food sent to the room – say breakfast pastries, or a sandwich platter, depending on timings. So you can nibble whilst you get ready.

If you’re getting ready at home, a greasy fry up around your wedding and bridesmaid dresses might not be the best plan. Food that is less messy to eat is probably a great idea….. ketchup and wedding dresses…nopeeee!

If you’ve got a friend or family member who is a bit of a ‘mother hen’ getting them to put on some nibbles will be awesome! I’ve seen many an Auntie, Mother or Father of the bride put on a simple buffet for everyone getting ready. Fruit, pastries, sausage rolls, sandwiches, crisps, are all decent options!

PINIMAGE

4. ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME

Timings are super important on a wedding day – see my previous blog post here . No-one wants to feel rushed on their wedding morning.

Leave plenty of time to get ready, and ask your hair and make up artist how long they need to work on you.

As a photographer, I always aim to be at the wedding ceremony space at least 30 mins before the wedding, so that means leaving ahead of the bride. The photos of getting in your dress – and being ready to leave, need to be taken before that.

Allowing a bit extra time for traffic or unexpected delays is good.

high house farm brewery wedding, dogs at weddings, yorkshire wedding venue, katie byram photography, huddersfield wedding photographer, northumberland wedding venue, outside wedding venue ,PINIMAGE

5. TIDY UP!

If you’re getting ready at home,  it can be a good idea to have a declutter or clean up prior to your wedding day. It’s easy to look past the clutter when you’re so used to being there, but it can make a difference when you look back on your wedding photos.

If you’re getting ready in a hotel, I usually try to have a quick tidy around just before the bride gets in her dress.  I like to hide the dress bags/underwear/empty coffee cups/labels & stray deodorant cans in the background. This saves me hours of photoshop time hahaha.

PINIMAGE

6.  HIRE PROFESSIONALS

Even if you are going for a natural look, everyone wants to look the best version of themselves on their wedding day. I can’t recommend enough booking a hair and make up artist for this.

Ask for recommendations from friends, or your photographer.

I’d also recommend a ‘trial’ before the day to try out different looks, and just to check that they are a lovely human that you’d also like to have around on your wedding morning.

As well as the obvious of making you look beautiful, i’ve seen hairdressers and MUAs: fixing dresses, advising Mums on their hair accessories, and helping diffuse family politics.  They are worth their weight in gold.

Another service that you could book is from your wedding dress boutique – if your dress is particularly tricky to get into, or requires some tape or positioning, you can be reassured having a professional on hand to help you get dressed and feel confident!

PINIMAGE

7.  MUSIC – CREATE A GREAT ATMOSPHERE

Music is goooood- make a playlist in advance for your wedding morning. Perhaps with tunes on that bring back some memories for you and your bridesmaids or just some cheesy, lighthearted music?

I’ve been to bridal preparations dozens of times where the bridal party has resorted to using the radio station on the TV and it’s definitely less personal. Plus – who wants to hear car insurance adverts when getting in their wedding dress?

huddersfield-wedding-photographerPINIMAGE

8. DON’T FORGET THE SMALL STUFF

Scissors, body tape, safety pins, a sewing kit, phone charger, mints…super handy!

Perhaps even put these in an easy-to0-find box in advance.

TOP TIP – A nice wooden coat hanger (doesn’t have to be personalised etc!) for your dress/bridesmaid dresses is so much nicer for photographs than a plastic one.

huddersfield wedding venue, huddersfield wedding photographer, summerhill bowling club, newcastle wedding, katie byram photography, diy wedding venue, diy venues huddersfield, tipi wedding huddersfieldPINIMAGE

9. GET YOUR S**T TOGETHER

Shoes, dresses, confetti, jewellery, ‘old/new/borrowed/blue’, underwear, bridesmaids presents. I recommend putting them all together in an easy to find space. This is great for your photographer to see what to capture and means you’re not running around to find everything on the morning.

TOP TIP – Remove labels from shoes & clothes before the day, this will save plenty of time on the wedding morning. Especially those stubborn little ones that stick to the sole of the shoe!

huddersfield-wedding-photographerPINIMAGE

10. THE BIG REVEAL

You may wish to get ready away from your mum/dad so that you can do a ‘big reveal’ – them seeing you ready to go get married. This can be quite an emotional moment, which I love to capture. Although I’ve found that at least 50% of Dads just make a joke about the bride ‘scrubbing up well’ instead. Hahaha!

Or perhaps the big reveal is to each other, as Jane & Amber on their wedding day.. ‘A first look’….

Anyway, hopefully the above has given you some great insider tips for getting ready.

After all it can be quite a big part of your wedding day, less stress and more fun is what we all want right!?

Helen & Ian got married on a very hot July day, at Newcastle Civic Centre. It was a very busy, lively day in town as it was the same day as Newcastle Pride!

They wanted a fun and relaxed wedding with a ‘ British summer holiday theme’ … with picnic lunch, fish & chips, deck chairs, cricket games and a big red bus. They even got the good old British weather!!

Sharing a hometown with the bride meant despite this wedding being in Newcastle,  around half the guests were Huddersfield and I fit right in!
